The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) and The Ooty Toy Train connect Ooty to Mettupalayam. The train rout between Mettupalayam and Ooty is extremely spectacular and though it is time consuming, running around the blue hills in the train is one of the best life experiences. The speed of the toy train using steam engine is mostly about 5 to 10 km per hour. So tourists can even get down and walk along the train in the woods. But this is quite risky at times and is not recommended.

In July 2005 UNESCO declared The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) as a World Heritage Site.

But sometimes the toy train engine may break down and the repairing can take 2 to 9 hours. Tourists mostly prefer to take a cab from Mettupalayam to Ooty, the faster and the safer mode.
